A Green New Deal for Leeds City Region

Green House will be taking part in this event organised by Group for Action on Leeds Bradford Airport (GALBA) who are opposed to the expansion of Leeds Bradford Airport.  The event will launch the report, A Green New Deal for Leeds City Region: GALBA's Vision for a Sustainable Local Economy which has been written in collaboration with Green House and published by the Green European foundation with the support of Green House.

The event will include presentations about the report by GALBA and Green House think tank, who collaborated to produce the report. There will be an opportunity for questions and discussion after the presentations.

Chris Foren, chair of GALBA, said:

"Our starting point is to recognise four facts: First, the climate crisis is a real and present danger. Second, to prevent its worst effects, we must cut emissions in half by 2030. Third, there is no realistic prospect of cutting aviation emissions in half by 2030. Fourth, people need secure and meaningful work. So we must - and we can - change our local economy to create a better future for everyone."

“GALBA doesn’t pretend to have all the answers. But we do know the government should address the regressive taxation system that gives tax breaks to aviation which, on a per passenger basis, is worth £94m to LBA every year - but overwhelmingly benefits better-off frequent flyers."

"Yorkshire needs an investment strategy that helps people make the transition to good, secure jobs that tackle the climate emergency rather than make it worse. That will take planning and lots of discussion with workers and employers. And we need to start those conversations NOW. This report is our contribution.”

The report, ‘A Green New Deal for Leeds City Region: GALBA's Vision for a Sustainable Local Economy’, will be available on GALBA’s website on the day of the event. This work builds on previous local Green New Deal proposals:
